Gorillaz is one of the most creative bands of all time, mixing technology, virtual reality, good music and now having collaborations with artists that would have been unthinkable. On this Discover Sunday we will talk about the most recent feature of their Song Machine project; a collaboration with the master Sir Elton John. Yes, Elton John and Gorillaz, would that be strange? bizarre? Always when mixing artists and sounds from quite different genres there is some reluctance for the fans but specifically on this case what was the result? Let´s find out.

The song begins with some piano chords and 2D voice (Damon Albarn) to subsequently have the collaboration of a rapper, 6black where at this point nothing is strange as Gorillaz has done several collaborations with rappers in the past. But afterwards the unique voice from Sir Elton John appears to make this song a perfect collaboration where the 3 voices are a special part on the song´s harmony.

Visually, the music video is so cool to watch, having 2D and Sir Elton John playing the piano, the Pink Phantom escaping from Murdoc who is chasing him without any luck. As well, the characterization of Sir Elton as a digital cartoon is something nice and fun to watch; good for him to keep trying new things and good for Gorillaz to continue being so visionary and the virtual band for excellence.

The lyrics, specially the chorus have that sense of losing someone´s love and who else to do a collaboration about a broken heart but with Sir Elton John;  “ I tried to say I love you, But you didn´t listen (Sometimes) I tried to give you everything you might need (Summer nights) In the sky made of diamonds and the world is flawless, I´ll be waiting for you on the other side”. As a result, this is one of the best collaborations from the Song Machine series, having an emblematic icon from the music history, the particular style of Gorillaz and nice lyrics to create a beautiful song.
