Last night got the song Trees on repeat, personally I like it very much and I have had the opportunity to watch Twenty One Pilots 3 times performing live, where they played this song at all those shows. Particularly on the 2019 performance when they were more known and bigger, the song included visual pyrotechnics and confetti paraphernalia. I perfectly remembered people speaking or questioning If they would be ready to headline music festivals; from my point of view yes they were, and with a song like Trees on their repertoire I ratify my opinion and that´s why today I´m getting deeper into the song, let’s take a look!
The song is included in their 3rd album Vessel and was never a single, but became a go to reference and a fan favorite, being played usually at the end of their shows having the elements of a closing track; starting slow, with energy and rhythm in the middle to extend the track while speaking and interacting with the audience. Actually, the band has acknowledged that Trees is one of their favorite songs to play live cause it gives them strength and certainly it is contagious to the fans.
Tyler Joseph is a multi-instrumentalist and on Trees he plays the keyboard at the very beginning while singing, providing a calm scenery that little by little keeps increasing its rhythm and vibe by having Josh Dun playing the drums, the song continues with those up and downs till at some point another electronic beat and sound is included, an inner energy is felt to keep jumping through the song. This seen live with the pyrotechnics and them heavily interacting with the fans is what makes Trees special.
Lyrically, even though is short in words it’s intrinsic message of someone looking for the truth, or some sort of answer even dealing with inner thoughts or problems causing pain or anxiety is very touching, but the interesting fact is If we are genuinely looking for it and are we ready for it’s consequences? Maybe that is what causes fear and till we are ready, we can find it. This can be heard here: “Why won´t you speak, Where I happen to be, Silent in the trees, Standing cowardly, I can feel your breath, I can feel my death, I want to know you, I want to see, I want to say…Hello”.
Good luck on your personal search for the truth, and even this can cause some discomfort, at the end is better to understand where you are and where you want to be; when you get to that point never forget where you came from and scream Hellooo! Hellooo! Hellooo! Hellooo! to your new yourself… standing silent in the trees.
