On July the 23rd Taylor Swift shocked the world announcing the release of her 8th album on the first minute of July the 24th USA ET, it was a delightful surprise given the fact that her 7th record “Lover” was released last November 2019 and for that reason “Folklore” wasn’t expected at all. After listening the album on its entirety; Exile feat. Bon Iver stood out and we want to reflect about it.
The song starts with piano and Justin Vernon from Bon Iver singing; a killer combination providing a gloomy environment to set up the stage of what the song will be about, one of those heartbreaking songs that only she knows how to write. Afterwards is Taylor turn to join and sing, where is beautiful how the lyrics are accompanied by the piano simulating a backup choir for her.
The piano keys slightly increase the rhythm to allow the entrance of Justin voice, subtly combined with Taylor´s while both continue singing and guiding us through the story of a couple that is elegantly complaining about what went wrong in the relationship where both have opposite opinions.
How many times have you been on that type of arguments? walking in circles due to the stubbornness of each side that at the end derives in tiredness where you just give up after so many second chances. This is perfectly exemplified on the lyrics “ I think I´ve seen this film before, And I didn’t like the ending, You´re not my homeland anymore, So what am I defending now?, You were my town, now I´m in exile seeing you out, I think I´ve seen this film before, so I´m leaving out the side door”
The lyrics Taylor put together combined with the melancholic piano touch plus Bon Iver will make you drop a couple of tears while remembering that love you somehow gave up. After dry those tears don’t forget to listen all the songs from “Folklore”, the most indie Taylor Swift record till today.
