Has been a while since we attended a live show, after the COVID-19 outbreak the live music industry has faced significant challenges with cancellation of summer festivals, tours and concerts impacting several people and jobs around the globe. The bands and solo artists have come with creative ways to somehow keep alive the industry with the help of the internet and today after some time we embraced this new situation and attended a “virtual live show” where Brandi Carlile performed from beginning to end her record “Bear Creek”.
It was an acoustic show without drums, so it had an intimate atmosphere and contrary to other livestreams, Brandi and the twins were at the same place which seemed to be more like the good all days where we could go to concerts, so definitely the effort was appreciated and it happened to be a great experience to feed our soul with such amazing arrangements on the songs and talking spontaneously in between; just like she used to do while performing in front of an audience.
“Bear Creek” might not be the most successful or favorite album from her discography but it has such hidden gems where on the show were performed so graciously like “That Wasn’t Me” with her on the piano, a song about addiction and how people and their relatives can struggle with it where someone is looking for some kind of forgiveness with deep lyrics like “ Did I bring shame on my family?, Did it show when I was weak?, Whatever you´ve seen, that wasn´t me”.
Another great surprise with this acoustic set was “100” where the cello during the entire song was amazing and creatively the absence of drums was fulfilled with a higher speed on the guitars. “I´ll Still Be There” with the high notes, the twins on the chorus and the cello maintained the cozy and beautiful environment. “Rise Again” was fully performed on piano and cello, which drastically contrasted with the album version on a beautiful way.
Of course there were no encores, but when the final notes of the last song of the album were played; a couple of surprises were performed. “The Chain” a cover from Fleetwood Mac and “If She Ever Leaves Me” a cover from the country super-group The Highwomen; which in a few years might become a lesbian anthem in country music.
After have watched live the performance; some of the songs might have been underrated at the time of its release, but this show demonstrated the gift Brandi and the twins have to make music, where no matter how fast moving is the bear creek, they will always still be there to find a way through it.
